When should newborn photos be taken?

When should newborn photos be taken? Newborn photos are best taken within the first two weeks after your baby is born. This allows us to capture sleepy images as well as get more poses accomplished. Your baby is more likely to become uncooperative as he or she gets older, and won’t go into poses as easily. What if my baby was in the NICU or otherwise unable to have newborn photos within the first 10-14 days? Life happens, and we have to work with what we have. When it comes to photographing an older baby, we have to adjust our expectations. Honestly, every newborn session, regardless of how old your baby is, will only go how your little one allows it to. This may mean that we can only get photos of your baby wrapped up nice and snug, or that we need to do more photos with mom and dad holding them. Or maybe your little one will let us take a nice variety of pictures, but needs more breaks in between poses. That’s OK, too! When should I schedule my newborn session? One thing within your control is scheduling your session early. I highly recommend booking your newborn […]

When you have a newborn in the house, your entire home can get turned upside down. Sometimes it can take awhile to get into a new routine of things with your new baby. With the added stress that comes with the holiday season, you can start to feel like you’re just barely getting by. If you have a newborn in tow this holiday season, I’m going to share with you my secrets to surviving, and dare I say thriving, during the holidays with a new baby. Avoid peak travel times whenever possible Holiday travel is an inevitable part of the holiday season. Whether you are heading out of town to visit family or just making a trip to the store, you will want to avoid peak travel times. Peak travel times might be manageable during the rest of the year, but during the holiday season, you can expect MUCH heavier crowds, which are not ideal for moms with newborns onboard. Instead, look for off-peak days and travel times to avoid traffic. Simplify the holiday with your newborn You can’t do it all, and that’s the harsh truth. If you’re not a Pinterest mom, don’t choose now to start. You can’t […]

I absolutely love newborn photography because it allows me to capture a moment in time that goes by so fast. It’s amazing how much they change in the early days. Little Persephone was born a bit early, but by the time I took her portraits at only 2 weeks old, you would hardly tell by looking at her. She was a such a cutie, and she slept beautifully during her newborn portrait session. I was only able to photograph so many different “themes” with Persephone because she was such a perfect baby. I got all of the photos that I wanted to, and even fit in some simple “Christmas” themed photos, which was great because I was dying to use my Christmas ornament props! That’s right, I used ornaments as props. I’m not sure where the bear came from, but the green mug was from Target. (You can really find everything at Target.) Next year I’ll have to remember to scour the Christmas ornaments for other cute finds. At the end of the session, we did a few different sibling and family shots. Big sister was so excited to take part, and was such a great listener! I really love […]

It has been about two years since I photographed baby Jillian at Millpond Park in Saline, Michigan. The session went so well, and two years later I am still totally in love with the portraits I captured. I’m so glad I got to photograph little Jillian. This session and these images are what made me fall in love with prints, and sent me on the path I’m on today as a primarily print photographer. I am so glad that her family has these beautiful images as tangible prints, and that they aren’t just on a hard drive somewhere. To schedule a consultation for your own baby’s portraits, contact me.

Newborn through Cake Smash Portraits A baby’s first-year photography plan is one of my favorite things to do as a maternity and newborn photographer. It’s so exciting to get to watch a little one grow up and hit all those milestones in their first year. Having a plan ready to go from the beginning is the best way to ensure your baby’s milestones aren’t missed. I did pregnancy announcement photos and maternity portraits for Gwen’s parents, so when it came time to meet her I was so excited! Little Gwen has had her own strong personality from day one, and I can’t wait to see who she grows up to become. With 3 older brothers, her fierce determination is certain to be a great trait. I met Heather and James at a park in Ann Arbor to capture beautiful outdoor images for some of Gwen’s milestone sessions. And milestones they were! I was excited to hear Gwen began sitting independently right after her 6-month sitter session. For her one-year photo session, we did more traditional portraits as well as a cake smash. Gwen’s mom, Heather, runs a small business in Milan, MI called Finchy Cakes. As she bakes cakes and […]
